Five things we give up for 40 days

Five things we give up for 40 days

For many people, the beginning of Lent is associated with “good resolutions”, such as: I will not drink alcohol or avoid chocolate for 40 days. After the carnival season, contemplation is the order of the day from Ash Wednesday and with it the chance to shape your life more consciously. The editors of the life departments of the Upper Austria News will also fast: no car to go to work, no animal products, no new clothes, no foreign products and no wasted time in front of the television, but instead a brisk walk.

You can read weekly in the health magazine how the editors are doing in their projects, what stumbling blocks they encounter and what effects the renunciation has on their well-being.

Farewell to milk and eggs: We live vegan from today!

Better for your own health, better for the climate, better for the world: the vegan lifestyle is finding more and more followers. For 40 days I will try out what life as a vegan tastes like. When and with which foods is it particularly difficult to give up? When will my children notice the change in diet, how will they react? I allow myself to cheat on two long-planned evenings with a fixed menu, otherwise I get excited about what vegan life has in store.

Yes to A: Only Austrian food until Easter

It sounds very simple: I do not eat food from abroad during Lent. On closer inspection, the project is ambitious. Spring is not exactly the time of year when the fruit and vegetable shelves are overflowing with local produce. And a few favorite foods are gone: Is Coca-Cola Austrian? How does grain coffee actually taste? Of course, olive oil doesn’t work either – just like many spices. And finished products: A no-go.

Bit the bus to work

Lent is a good reason for me to make good resolutions. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean that I’ve actually always successfully carried out my projects. But quite a few times I’ve really managed to go without sweets, sausage or alcohol for weeks. I fasted on juice three times before Easter (but only for ten days) – and afterwards I always felt like a newborn and as light as a feather. This time, encouraged by my colleagues, I have decided not to drive to work if my professional schedule allows it. In any case, I have already printed out the detailed timetable for the bus line.

A half-hour walk daily

It doesn’t sound like much – and it will still take a lot of effort: go for a half-hour walk every day. This is definitely not a problem at the weekend, but probably even more so in everyday work. Because instead of lying comfortably on the couch in my jogging pants after a hard day in the office and the long drive home, from now on I’m going outside every evening. In the dark as well as in wind and weather, rain or snow. Why do I even want to do this? It gives me half an hour just to myself – I’m also in the fresh air, clear my head and have time to think. So let’s go!
