This is the highest value since November 1984. Compared to January, the consumer price index (CPI) is expected to have increased by 1.3 percent. The main drivers are energy prices. Inflation was 5 percent in January and 4.3 percent in December.
“Rising fuel and energy prices are currently heating up inflation,” said Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas in a broadcast on Wednesday. The CPI reading and detailed results for February will be released on March 17th.
The inflation rate harmonized at European level (HICP) was 5.5 percent in February 2022 compared to the same month of the previous year, as shown by the calculations of Statistics Austria as part of a preliminary flash estimate. According to the first survey, inflation was 1.3 percent compared to the previous month.
