Several emergency calls were received by the Sierning police (Steyr-Land district) on Tuesday evening around 6:30 p.m.: Witnesses had observed three boys who parked a burning, smoking vehicle in a strange driveway, threw unknown objects into the adjacent bushes and then fled.

Firefighters quickly got the fire in the car under control. Based on the number plates, the vehicle owner was found out immediately. The man said his 17-year-old son could borrow the car as long as one of his licensed friends drove it. The 17-year-old does not yet have a valid driver’s license – he is currently doing his L17 training and is only allowed to drive the vehicle when his father is in the car.

Due to the unclear situation and since it could not be ruled out that the young people had been injured in the fire, the police immediately launched a large-scale search operation using drones and called for additional emergency services and a dog unit. However, the search was unsuccessful. Only when the 17-year-old responded to a call from his father could he be questioned. He admitted driving the car to pick up his two friends (aged 14 and 15). When the car started to burn, he panicked and just parked it in the next driveway.

His friends eventually reappeared – in the hospital with their parents. The 14 and 15-year-olds, like the 17-year-old, had to be treated for headaches and nausea at the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen Clinic in Steyr.

The items thrown into the adjacent bushes turned out to be a box of pills and smoking paraphernalia. It is currently being investigated whether these are drugs. The boys have all been impeccable so far. The car was totaled. It is still being determined why the car caught fire. According to the police, the fire started in the area of the fuses.
