Up to 121 percent: drugstore goods in Austria are significantly more expensive than in Germany

Plasters, body milk, hand cream, night care and make-up: These and numerous other everyday products are significantly more expensive in Austria than in Germany. This emerges from the online price monitor of the Vienna Chamber of Labor (AK). For this purpose, 116 identical drugstore products (cleaning agents, body care and hygiene items, baby food, men’s care products) from German and Austrian online supermarkets and drugstores were compared.

AK packed 116 drugstore items in a shopping cart: In Austria, the price was 529.64 euros. In Germany, the costs amounted to 406.50 euros, which is around 30 percent less.

According to the comparison, the price difference was most blatant for a body milk with a content of 200 milliliters: The price difference is around 121 percent. The difference was also striking for 20 plasters from Hansaplast (118 percent) and make-up from Maybelline Jade (113 percent).

98 of the 116 drugstore products compared are cheaper in Germany than in Austria – only 18 products are the other way around.

It is remarkable that the products in Austrian online supermarkets (Billa, Interspar) are on average 14.6 percent more expensive than in online drugstores (Bipa, dm, Müller). In Germany, online supermarkets are only 0.2 percent more expensive on average.
