Steyr and Enns now also exist on Mars – the mayor of Steyr, Markus Vogl (SPÖ), reported on Wednesday via press release. Two craters on the red planet were named after the Upper Austrian cities. According to Vogl, the naming was engineered by American planetary scientist Janice L. Bishop, who works for the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) project. She has relatives in Steyr.
The extraterrestrial “Steyr” has a diameter of 20 kilometers and is located in the southern hemisphere of Mars just below the equator. The crater “Enns” is right next to it. In addition to the two Upper Austrian cities, the Mars craters are also named after Innsbruck, Kufstein and Vils near Reutte.
