30th anniversary of his death: Audrey Hepburn’s style never gets old

Big sunglasses, swinging circle skirts, ballerinas and, of course, the little black dress: even 30 years after her death, Audrey Hepburn is still considered one of the greatest style icons of all time.

The actress, who died of cancer on January 20, 1993 at the age of just 63, fascinated millions of viewers in the 50s and 60s. Her role as a princess in the classic film “A Heart and a Crown” or as the lively party girl Holly Golightly in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” are unforgettable. The shot of her taking a break in front of the shop window – croissant in hand, wearing a pearl necklace, dark glasses, opera gloves and wrapped in a black dress – is legendary. And at the same time it was the starting signal for the triumph of the “little black dress”, which is still part of the standard wardrobe of many women today.

daughter of a baroness

The actress herself was born in Brussels in 1929, the daughter of a Dutch baroness and a British-Irish banker. She trained as a ballerina, but soon had to admit that her dream would not come true. Due to the malnutrition during the war, her muscle growth was impaired, which meant that she could not keep up with the other dancers despite all her efforts. She began working as a photo model, got hold of small roles in films and finally made a big career in America. Hollywood wanted the delicate beauty, which didn’t have the sex appeal of Marilyn Monroe, which had been so popular until now. The fact that many fashion designers flocked to Audrey Hepburn is often attributed to her petite physique (the mannequin that was made in 1954 to create her wardrobe did not have to be changed until the end of her life). But it wasn’t that alone. “It’s the way she knows how to wear the clothes, full of expression, dignity and inventiveness,” her favorite designer Hubert de Givenchy once said. Audrey Hepburn never thought of herself as beautiful. On the contrary, she thought her style was easy to copy: “All you need is a fringe, sunglasses and sleeveless dresses.” A charming understatement.
