Meanwhile, Germany, under international pressure for several days, said yesterday that it will quickly make a decision on the delivery of its Leopard heavy tanks to Ukraine. Still, the online edition of Der Spiegel stated that “the decision is made.”
According to the publication, the government of Olaf Scholz is ready to deliver the units, “at least one company”.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said he had “expressly encouraged partner countries that have Leopard tanks ready for deployment to train Ukrainian forces with these tanks.” This, noted at a Berlin press conference with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, seemed a strong indication of a willingness to hand over such material.
According to analysts, these tanks are likely to have a significant impact on defenders facing Russian troops, who are retaking ground on the eastern Ukrainian front.
This statement marks a step forward in the position of Germany, where the Scholz government is under increasing pressure to give NATO member states the green light to allow them to
deliver Ukraine German-made Leopard main battle tanks.
