“Shortly before 8:00 p.m., a person staged an attack with a knife,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement. The Spanish justice investigates the act as alleged “terrorism”.
The investigation is being carried out by a judge from the National Court, the body responsible for terrorism cases, the prosecutor’s office said.
“The attack has occurred in the Church of San Isidro”, in Algeciras, province of Cadiz, where there was “a seriously injured person, while the person who has been killed has been abroad,” the document added.
“The attacker has been arrested and is in the custody of the National Police,” he reported. “The facts are being investigated and analyzed, without it being possible for the moment to determine the nature of the attack,” the ministry continued.
A police source told AFP that the person killed was a sacristan, while one of the injured was a priest. According to the source, the attacker was wearing a djellaba and “shouted something” at the time of the attack.
News from the local media, based on eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailant was armed with a machete with which he killed the sacristan.
The president of the Andalusian government, Juan Manuel Moreno, described the attack as “terrible and heartbreaking”.
“A sacristan has been murdered and at least one other priest has been injured in an attack that has taken place in Algeciras,” he explained, before calling to avoid hasty conclusions and untimely reactions. “Prudence, the facts are being investigated,” she urged.
