The child had left the group and was found in a biotope after a search operation. It was taken to the Wiener Neustadt hospital, but died there, the Burgenland state police reported on Tuesday. The exact cause of the accident is still being determined, it said.
A group from a kindergarten in the Mattersburg district went on a trip on Monday morning. The five-year-old must have left the group shortly before noon, after which the police were immediately notified. Seven patrols, a service dog and two drones were deployed.
The child was then found in a garden pond and resuscitation started immediately. However, she later died in hospital. The exact course of the accident is now the subject of the investigation, said a police spokesman.
