The south of Linz has grown significantly over the past decade. Around 3,000 people have moved here, and almost 21,600 people now live there. Their number will continue to rise in the future, above all with the planned construction projects on the former barracks area in Ebelsberg and the adjacent summer grounds.

Renovation starts this year

Around 3,000 apartments are to be built in several stages on the said areas. The area is being developed by the WSF private foundation of the XXXLutz Group and the housing cooperatives WAG, Giwog and Neue Heimat.

The renovation of the eleven listed buildings on the barracks site is scheduled to start this year, but it is not clear when the new buildings will follow. Planning councilor Dietmar Prammer (SP) and urban development director Hans-Martin Neumann assume that the project is subject to an EIA. It is uncertain when the necessary environmental impact assessment will begin and, above all, how long it will take. However, the EIA decision is a prerequisite for the start of construction.

As reported, the construction plans are controversial, and there is great concern about a further deterioration in the already tense traffic situation. There is no alternative to the project, says Prammer. If there is no construction in Ebelsberg, the approximately 6,000 people who are to live there in the future would mostly settle in the Linz area – more car traffic would be programmed.
