Coach crashed over the embankment near Schladming – one dead

A 31-year-old German passenger was fatally injured in the accident. Among the other passengers there were many injured and several seriously injured. The 51-year-old bus driver was also seriously injured. He could not be questioned by the police, it said when asked by the APA. The cause of the accident was initially unclear.

The accident happened on Saturday around 11:15 p.m. on the Rohrmooser Landstraße (L722). The bus from Lower Bavaria, specifically the Passau area, was heading towards Schladming. In the so-called “Schlösselkehre” the vehicle came off the road, overturned several times, as reported by the fire brigade, while it fell down the embankment there and came to rest on the side of the flat roof of a company building built on the slope.

Immediately behind the accident vehicle drove a bus with firefighters who provided first aid and secured the accident site. The accident wreck was initially in an unstable position. It had to be secured. Three people were trapped in the wreckage. The fire brigade freed them using hydraulic rescue equipment.

After receiving first aid, the injured were taken to the hospitals in Schladming, Schwarzach and Salzburg. The crashed coach was recovered in the early hours of the morning using a truck-mounted crane. According to the fire brigade, well over 100 rescue workers were deployed, including firefighters, the Red Cross with paramedics, doctors and a crisis intervention team, the police, mountain rescue and emergency helicopters.
