It was 4:01 p.m. when the seismographs recorded slight fluctuations in the Traunviertel: An earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 was registered in Molln on Tuesday afternoon. Damage to buildings is not to be expected with this strength, according to the responsible department at Geosphere Austria, formerly ZAMG. However, the earthquake was clearly felt near the epicenter. Incidentally, perceptions can be reported using a separate online form.

Relatively rare in Upper Austria

According to statistics, earthquakes in Upper Austria are relatively rare. Noticeable shocks only occur about three to four times a year in this country. Most recently, OÖN reported on a slight earthquake in the Salzkammergut in the summer of the previous year: The tremors reached Hallstatt in the early evening of August 22nd a magnitude of 2.5 and were occasionally felt slightly by the population.

Series of earthquakes in the previous year

In January 2022, several earthquakes occurred northeast of Aschach an der Donau within a few days – the OÖN reported. They reached a magnitude of 3.2 in the Gramastetten area, an intensity that occurs on average only every seven years in Upper Austria.
