Therefore, the news of the agreement between the two countries for the dredging of the waterway and the construction of the new international bridge over the Yaguaron River was received with optimism and enthusiasm.

Such was the case of the mayor Yurramendi, of Cerro Largo, who considered the project as a hinge point for production from the Department. “It is something that we have been talking about for a long time but we also knew that it was a decision that depended a lot on Brazil. Of course he was very happy, very happy to be able to materialize this, which was already an initiative, ”he indicated in radio statements.

What is the agreement between Uruguay and Brazil about?

During a bilateral meeting in Brasilia in which the Minister of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche, and those of Foreign Relations, Francisco Bustillo, and Transportation and Public Works, Jose Luis Falero, on the Uruguayan side; and the ministers Mauro Vieira (External relationships), fernando haddad (Finance), Renan Filho (Transport) and Marcio France (Ports and Airports), on the Brazilian side; both countries agreed to open the tender for the dredging of the Uruguay-Brazil Waterway.

The idea is to start work before the end of this year, and it will require a investment between 8 and 10 million dollars.

The realization of the initiative will result in great benefits for Uruguay’s foreign trade, since it will produce an “improvement in logistics costs” in an area where the export of soybeans, rice, wood and fertilizers.

In addition, the Brazilian transport portfolio committed to open within two months —with the possibility of extending the term to three months— the tender for the construction of a new international bridge on the Yaguarón River. In this case, the intention is also to sign the construction contract at the end of this year.

On the Uruguayan side, there will also be work to put the historic bridge in condition Baron of Mauathe road junction between Yaguarón, in Brazil, and Río Blanco, on this side, once the new bridge is operational.
