Speeds of 118 km/h are not uncommon on the Feuerkogel – in Waizenkirchen they are. With this speed the wind swept through the community in the Hausruckviertel in the morning hours today. “It’s close to the hurricane gust,” says Christian Ortner from GeoSphere Austria (formerly ZAMG). “That’s pretty rare.” These wind speeds would have brought with them a shower line that ran through the Hausruck, according to the meteorologist. “There was a certain dynamic there – in the area of the Kobernausserwald we also recorded individual lightning.”

The storm was violent but brief. Wind peaks and rain came early in the morning – by nine o’clock the weather had already calmed down. “The worst is over. There can still be 60 to 80 km/h, but it’s getting quieter now,” says Ortner. Only in the south of the country does he expect rain for a little longer. But things will gradually calm down there too.

Incidentally, the strongest gusts were measured at 153 km/h on the Jauerling in Lower Austria at 955 meters.

A roller coaster in terms of weather is expected for the coming days.
