The Carmelo Airport registered a record operation two months after its inauguration

Two months after its inauguration, and under the operation of a private operator, the Carmel International Airport received a total of 281 flights in the first two months of the year –119 in January and 162 in February–, reaching a record of operations.

The establishment, which was inaugurated on December 19 last year by President Luis Lacalle Pouis located in the Zagarzazú spa, in the department of Cologne and is managed by Uruguayan airports.

The peak of operations occurred, precisely, in the Carnival weekwhere thousands of visitors traveled to Uruguay to participate in the festivities.

In this sense, in the week that was between Monday 20 and Sunday 26 February, the 43% of the registered flights that month. In that case, the “vast majority” of them came from the San Fernando Airport in Argentina, and an increase in baptism flights occurred.

In this line, it should be noted that the Carmelo Airport has a weekly flight that is carried out regularly from the Argentine terminal.

The second phase of works for the airport is approaching

In addition to the success of the first two months of operation, from Aeropuertos Uruguay they confirmed a second phase of works for the Carmelo Airport scheduled for this yearwhich include the construction of a parking lota new access road to the air terminal and the infrastructure development of hangars for general aviation.

In the first, the construction of the 770-meter air terminal was completed, equipped to receive national and international flights; the renovation of all the infrastructure, after the paving and extension of the main track of 1,190 meters, the construction of streets, and a platform of 6,000 square meters. Also, detachments were built for the National Air Police and the National Directorate of Firefighters.

In turn, the government foresees an investment of 900 million dollars in terms of public works, in general, for this year.
