“I really admire the way Mikaela skis. She definitely deserves to break the record,” said the 66-year-old in an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (Saturday).
The American Mikaela Shiffrin can write skiing history again in Are, Sweden. If the alpine superstar from the USA wins the slalom competition on Saturday, the 27-year-old would replace Stenmark of Sweden as the sole record holder with her 87th World Cup victory.
For Stenmark, Shiffrin is the complete alpine skier. “What impresses me even more about Mikaela is that she is now also winning in the speed disciplines, both in the Super-G and in the downhill. I would never have been able to do that. I’ve said it before and I’ll emphasize it again once: She will be the first to win 100 World Cup races.”
Shiffrin’s skiing technique is “really flawless”. You would hardly make any mistakes, that is your greatest advantage. “Many ski racers are fast in a few sections of a race, Mikaela runs her line from top to bottom,” said Stenmark.
