Geosphere Austria reported wind peaks of around 111 kilometers per hour on the Jubilee Observatory (as of 9:00 a.m.). The weather service expected the storm to subside later in the day. “In the east, however, this can only be expected in the evening,” said meteorologist Thomas Wostal of the Austria Press Agency.
According to Wostal, it was particularly stormy on Saturday night. The Geosphere issued an orange storm warning for Saturday. In this context, the professional fire brigade spoke of 25 operations. “It was about fallen trees, scaffolding and loose roof tiles and windows,” said spokesman Lukas Schauer. “Of course we are constantly monitoring the situation. If necessary, there are concepts to increase the team,” it said.
Around 86 km/h were measured in downtown Vienna in the morning, as ORF meteorologist Manuel Oberhuber reported on Twitter on Saturday. In some places there could also be gusts of over 100 kilometers per hour during the day, according to Geosphere.
Schönbrunn Zoo informed its visitors about the closure on Friday. “Due to the storm predicted for Saturday, March 11, the Austrian Federal Gardens cannot open the Schönbrunn Palace Park in the morning. That is why it is not possible to visit the Tiergarten after 9 a.m.,” it was announced. You will be informed as soon as the zoo can be reopened.
