In 1984, Karl Landa began training in physiotherapy. “That was the guinea pig class back then, we were the first in Steyr,” says the now 59-year-old with a smile. Three years later he had completed his training and in 1990 he founded the “Physio Aktiv” practice. “At that time there were three independent physiotherapists in Steyr, today there are more than 80.”

For 33 years now, his team has not only treated patients, but also looks after athletes of all performance levels in a wide variety of sports as sports physiotherapists. “From the rowing Olympic team in Sydney to a wheel masters world champion, the former forward Bundesliga team to ATP players, we have accompanied many on their way to their peak performance,” says Landa.

What physiotherapists didn’t have in their tool kits back then were the concepts of “Functional Movement Systems” (FMS). “Ten years ago, we were the first in Austria to establish this American system of qualitative movement testing, which looks at the patient holistically,” says Landa, who is also the chairman of Austrian sports physiotherapists. Recognizing the risk of injury and overexertion at an early stage and reducing it with targeted individual exercise programs is in everyone’s own best interest and applies in particular to athletes.

Landa and his team – Heinz Pranner, Ewald Hirschenauer, Martina Fröhlich and Brigitte Landa – are celebrating the 33-year existence of the practice with a series of activities this year. Landa: “Unfortunately, our 30th anniversary fell through due to the corona pandemic, which is why we have now decided to celebrate this Schnapszahl celebration.” , a specialist symposium for trainers, officials and athletes as well as people interested in sports is planned at the FH campus Steyr with a subsequent celebration at Glück Auf in the Museum Arbeitswelt.

Sweepstakes until the end of March

A special competition to mark the 33-year anniversary of the practice runs until the end of March: the Physio-Aktiv team is giving away 33 FMS test batteries worth 160 euros each. For this purpose, 16 sports were selected, which are practiced most frequently in the region. Anyone who has had enough of the recurring ailments and would like to take their sports health into their own hands can register at www.physioaktiv.at.
