Nothing stands in the way of this year’s Wels inner city criterion. Mayor Andreas Rabl (FP) and organizer Paul Resch agreed on Monday about the last remaining financing issues.

This means that the 24th cycling criterion can be started on July 26th as planned in cooperation with the OÖ Nachrichten. “We have reached an agreement not only for this year, but also for the coming year. The compromise is essentially that our sponsorship contributions will be adjusted for inflation,” Rabl outlines.

The mayor emphasizes that it was important to him and Resch to secure the 25th edition of the criterion. In the coming year, the Upper Austrian cycling president wants to finally retire. Despite numerous discussions, a successor has not yet been found. Therefore, the anniversary criterion could also be the last one. But the cycling spectacle, which has attracted many domestic and international cycling stars to Wels over the course of its long history, has been on the brink of collapse several times. And every time there was a sequel.

The fact is that the event costs a lot of money and a number of sponsors could only be retained because they succumb to the stubbornness of the organizer every year.

Resch finds it a shame that the continued existence of the Wels inner city criterion depends on his person: “There are only two sports that are associated with Wels. They are basketball and cycling. As people from Wels, we underestimate this criterion.” (fam)
