Poverty fell to 9.1% in the second half of 2022

The rate of people below the line of the poverty dropped to 9.1% during the second half of last year, reported Monday the National Statistics Institute (INE)which highlighted that the percentage reaches six out of ten households.

The measurement of the Continuous Household Survey (ECH) showed an improvement of 1.6% compared to the previous indicator, from September 2022, where 10.7% of the population was below the poverty line, which represented 380,000 Uruguayans.

In relation to the proportion of poor households, Montevideo It is the region that presents the highest value (8.2%), followed by urban localities in the interior with 5,000 inhabitants or more.

Regarding indigence, the INE reported that 0.1% of households were located under the homelessness linewhile this data for the total number of people was 0.2%.

Basic basket and minimum income

The estimate of indigence at the individual level for the country as a whole indicates that out of every 1,000 people, 2 do not reach the minimum income planned to cover basic food needs. The minimum income necessary to avoid falling within the line of indigence is between 4000 and 4800 Uruguayan pesos depending on the region. In Montevideo, for example, the basic income is $4,984, while in the urban interior it is $4,626 and in the rural interior it is around $4,156, if the data for December 2022 is taken.

For its part, the value taken by the proportion of poor people for the second semester of 2022 implies that of every 1,000 people, 91 of them do not exceed the minimum income to cover the basic food needs. Regarding the Complete Basic Basket, if the data for December 2022 are taken, the values ​​are around between 8000 and 18000 Uruguayan pesos, making a big difference in the country’s capital. In Montevideoone must earn $18,759 to not be poor, while in the urban interior $12,244 and in the rural interior $8,353.

Poverty by departments

The departments that show 8% or more of poverty are Artigas, Rivera, long hill, Thirty-Three, Lavalleja and the capital of the country, Montevideo. These are followed Rio Negro, Soriano and Rocha with a percentage of 6 and 7.9%. In third place, with a range between 4 and 5.9%, are the departments of Salto, Tacuarembó, Durazno and Maldonado. In last place, being the departments with the lowest percentage of poverty with a range up to 3.9% are Soriano, Flores, Florida, Colonia, San José and Canelones.
