The 2023 Census has a start date, when will it be?

The government announced that the National Census 2023 will begin on April 29 in all Uruguay: the first stage will be online, while from May 17 the census takers will do the face-to-face survey.

The technical director of National Statistics Institute (INE), Diego Aboal; the pro-secretary of Presidency of the Republic, Rodrigo Ferresand the president of the National Census Commission and director of the Office of Planning and Budget (OPP), Isaac Alfie, led the submission of the 2023 Census.

At the launch event, they gave more details on how the national population survey will be carried out to update the country’s statistics based on the design of better public policies.

What will the Census be like?

The population, household and housing census will examine 1,500,000 households in 650 localities, and will have the novelty of completing the records through a web page —which will remain enabled from April 29—, with any digital device with internet access.

This first stage will last about four weeks, and from May 17, some 7,000 duly identified census takers will carry out their records throughout the country. In the event that the person to be interviewed has entered their data on the web —self-census—, You will be asked for the code obtained at the end of the form.

The virtual census can be completed by entering censo2023.uy, and it will be necessary to identify the household with the meter data and the UTE account number to identify the households. The questionnaire will be available every day of the week during 24 hours, and can be completed from anywhere with internet connection.

Alfie, for his part, stressed that the census is the largest data collection deployment operation for policy making in a country. “From where to install a new teaching center to where to build a hospital or a police station,” he explained.

Likewise, the official stressed the importance of carrying out a pre-census. “Today we have more than 70,000 census areas and more than 1,500,000 households verified throughout the country with the georeferenced map,” he said. “The get is coverage and quality of information”, he added.
