The United Kingdom today questioned the continuity of the chief of the General Staff of the Russian Army, Valeri Gerasimov, arguing that the general “failed” in his offensive strategy in Ukraine.

“On January 11, 2023, the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) of Russia, General Valery Gerasimov, personally assumed command of the ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine,” begins a statement from the British Ministry of Defense released in your Twitter account.

According to the note, “Gerasimov’s tenure has been characterized by his effort to launch a general winter offensive to extend Russian control over the entire Donbass region,” in eastern Ukraine.

However, “80 days later, it is increasingly evident that this project has failed,” says the British Ministry of Defense, quoted by the Europa Press news agency.

For London, “in several axes throughout the Donbass, the Russian forces have made only marginal gains” but at a high price, with “tens of thousands of casualties” and “wasting” the advantage they gained with the declared mobilization of troops the last boreal autumn.

“After 10 years as CGS, there is a realistic possibility that Gerasimov is pushing the limits of how far Russia’s political leadership will tolerate failure,” the Defense note concludes.
