So far it was unclear which bridge is shown in the landscape in the background. Research has now revealed that this is the Romito Bridge in Laterina in the Tuscan province of Arezzo. The historian Silvano Vinceti, President of the Italian Committee for the Valorization of the Historical Cultural and Environmental Heritage, coordinated the investigations. They show that da Vinci immortalized the Etruscan-Roman bridge Romito in the painting.

“Today only one arch remains of it, but between 1501 and 1503 the bridge was heavily used, as testified by a document found in the State Archives of Florence on the state of art objects in the Medici family possessions,” Vinceti told a press conference yesterday about the painting, the original of which has been exhibited in the Louvre art museum in Paris since the end of the 18th century.

drones and documents

“At that time Leonardo was staying in the Arno Valley. The Romito Bridge had four arches and rested on two rocks,” said the historian. To substantiate the thesis, pictures were taken with a drone and a virtual reconstruction of the bridge was presented. In addition, historical documents would prove that Leonardo was often in the area around Laterina at that time.
