senators of USA announced on Wednesday a bipartisan plan for combat the growing influence of China in the world, which seeks to limit the investments and technology received by the Asian giant and deter any threat against Taiwan.
“The Chinese government is not holding back in its quest to dominate the 21st century and if we in the United States were to rest on our laurels, if we let the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) defeat us, it would have serious consequences for the democratic nations of the world.”said the head of the Senate’s Democratic majority, Chuck Schumer, reported the AFP news agency.
In a press conference with 11 other legislators, Schumer detailed a five-point plan to face Chinese competitionafter the approval last year of a bill to boost semiconductor production in the United States.
The plan to limit China’s influence
The Democratic senator said they will analyze export limitations and possible sanctions to restrict Beijing’s ability to acquire “and even steal” American innovations in artificial intelligence and others technological developments.
The Treasury and the Department of Commerce would have with this initiative the power to review and stop the flow of money going to Chinese high-tech companieshe added.
The senators’ initiative also seeks to support small US businesses and reinforce the process of evaluating the implications for national security of foreign investments in the United States.
The plan will also include Proposals to deter Chinese aggression towards Taiwanan island that China considers part of its territory and which is the world’s largest manufacturer of microprocessors.
Without going into details, Schumer stated that the initiative is supported by proposals (from both parties) of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.
In 2022, that panel approved $4.5 billion for the defense of Taiwan over four years.
In the coming months, lawmakers will work with their Republican counterparts to write the bills necessary to achieve those objectives.
“In short, time is not on our side. The Xi (Jinping) regime works every day to catch up and surpass the United States“Schumer said.
“There is no reason why our two parties in Congress and the Senate cannot come together and send a strong message to the Chinese government that we are united in this urgent national security effort and are committed to maintaining America’s leadership in the future,” he added.
