It’s a simple question to which everything on offer for cyclists in Linz is reduced: Would I let my five-year-old child ride here? In other words: if those responsible are planning a cycle network for children, then it is also good for everyone. That was a central message of the Kidical Mass, which the Linz cycling lobby called for.
“Children move intuitively in space and perceive their environment directly and immediately,” says Thomas Hofer from the Radlobby Linz. Moving around yourself would offer sensory impressions at eye level and the chance for autonomy. It would create satisfaction if a child led the way to kindergarten or to school by yourself.
But that should be as safe as possible, which brings us back to the question: Would I let my five-year-old drive here?
In Linz, this question has to be answered with a clear no, especially in the central area – keyword Nibelungen Bridge. Therefore, the demand of the event with 500 participants was also clearly defined: A clear and gap-free network of cycle paths is needed. Then it would not only be safer for children, but cycling would become a real mobility option for a large number of people, the event said. And: Traffic planning that looks to the future should not be based on the needs of car traffic.
In addition to Linz, there have also been bike rides of this type in Braunau, Gallneukirchen, Gmunden, Ottensheim, Pregarten, Steyr and Vöcklabruck in the past few days.
