These are the new MSP recommendations for water with higher salinity

He Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reported through an official statement the new recommendations to take into account, by those who live in the metropolitan area of Montevideo and cannelloniin relation to the high levels of salinity in drinking water of SBI.

The government portfolio expressed that the measure responds to “the situation of persistent drought” in this area of ​​the country, and is intended to “safeguard the water supply to meet the needs of the population“. For it, “OSE has defined drinking water from other sources as a line of action“, which would explain the change in its characteristics and flavor.

The salinization strategy “seeks to preserve continuity of service, as well as avoid contamination by microbiological agents“, as explained by the MSP, which foresees that the measure will be limited in time.

Likewise, the ministry reminded the population that “most of the salt ingested comes from processed foods” such as, for example, sausages and cheeses, and baked goods, so it is recommended to avoid adding salt to food.

The following recommendations for the population with comorbidities or in risk groups were endorsed by the chairs of Nephrology, Cardiology, Internal Medicine, National Academy of Medicineas well as by the presidency of the Cardiovascular Health Honorary Commission.

General population without a diagnosis of arterial hypertension

  • Maintain the usual daily water intake which may be entirely OSE water.
  • Do not add salt to food in children starting semi-solid/solid diets (infants up to 2 years).
  • To be possible, for the preparation of infant formulas, use mineral water.
  • In population with higher risk of being hypertensive not known (older than 60 years) regular blood pressure checks are recommended.

Population using antihypertensive drugs and diuretics

  • They should minimize the consumption of foods with excess sodium.
  • They will be able to continue consuming OSE water up to one liter per day and it is recommended to complete your usual intake with mineral water.

Population with any of the following conditions: cirrhosis, pregnant, chronic kidney disease, or heart failure

  • Avoid as much as possible the consumption of OSE wateradvised by your attending physician.
  • In case you have to take itit is recommended Do not exceed one liter of water per day and increase the frequency of blood pressure checks.
  • Complete the intake of the daily volume of water recommended by your doctor.

According to the MSP, these recommendations are dynamic and will be subject to the situation detected.
