Crosses between the government and the Broad Front for the Salary Councils

The minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Pablo Mieresand legislators Broad Front (FA) they had a crossover Labor Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Senators during a discussion on the project that modifies the law 18,566 of collective bargaining for the private sector.

The controversy over the Salary Tips was revived during a commission session, which was attended by representatives of the MTSS —with Mieres at the head—, of the business chambers and of the PIT-CNT. Shortly after the tenth round began, the objective was to address the modifications to the law that arose from the suggestions of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in 2019, after a complaint from the business sector in that body.

During his presentation, the head of the MTSS explained that the project discussed there was the result of the government’s effort and work to prevent the country from continuing in the “black list” of countries that do not respect labor laws or agreements. However, and based on the fact that the initiative does not meet all the aspirations of the chambers and the PIT-CNT, it also does not contemplate an observation referring to the competence of the Salary Councils.

However, to the Broad Front, the explanations of the ministerial delegation did not seem the most accurate, and pointed out that the ILO recommendations were not obligations, and that they should be tripartitely agreed. Something that, in the end, did not happen.

A rowdy exchange and account passes

There began the chaos in the enclosure, with crosses from one side to the other. When order was recovered a bit, Mieres took the opportunity to point out that the FA seemed to want to listen to the ILO only when the organization was issued in line with its ways of thinking. After further interruptions, the minister pointed out that, different from what the opposition said, The project does not deprive workers of the right.

To redouble the bet, the head of the MTSS recalled that the Broad Front had presented a project similar to the one discussed there, so, then, the leftist coalition had also attacked rights. “I think you should think the same regardless of which side of the counter you happen to be on,” he added.

The response, by the Frente Amplista senator Juan Castillo, he considered it unnecessary to doubt the political or intellectual honesty of any of those present.

The closing of the discussion revolved around freedom of expression, when the nationalist senator Grace Bianchi She was accused of “being behind the scenes” from the Frente Amplio bench.

The session, marked by interruptions and account passes between the two majority sectors of Parliament, then continued with the participation of the business chambers and the PIT-CNT.
