According to the police, the way to a resuscitation operation in Lower Austria was blocked for an ambulance there. The patient died before the ambulance arrived at the scene. “But we got away from the distribution group a few minutes later,” said spokeswoman Corina Had.

The action at the distribution group took place at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning. According to the police, the activists only cleared the way after the officers intervened. “In this regard, the activists were reported in accordance with the penal code and the road traffic regulations,” said the state police department.

Free travel only after police intervention

The Viennese professional rescue service confirmed on Wednesday the statements made by the executive: “The lane was only free for us after the police intervened,” said spokeswoman Had. “There was an operation in Lower Austria where an elderly man had to be resuscitated.” Before the Viennese rescuers arrived in Lower Austria, they received the message that the patient was already being treated by emergency helicopters. Despite all efforts, the man died at the scene. Had emphasized that as a result there was no longer any contact with the patient, but “it’s always about human lives”.

“Error Happened”

When asked, the spokesman for the “Last Generation” Florian Wagner admitted on Wednesday that “a mistake happened”. “In the rush before the action, we didn’t call the rescue control center and inform them about our action,” says Wagner. The “Last Generation” had previously denied the allegations. According to a first statement, “there was no rescue vehicle in sight” at the distribution group.

Vienna ÖVP demands consequences

The Viennese ÖVP boss Karl Mahrer called for consequences on Wednesday. “We need an amendment to the assembly law and imprisonment for willfully blocking emergency vehicles,” said Mahrer. With the blocking of rescue vehicles, the climate activists had crossed the last border, said the Viennese ÖVP chairman in a broadcast.

Passers-by attacked activists

A second protest action also took place at the Praterstern on Wednesday. There the “Last Generation” was supported by a group of scientists from the “Scientists For Future”. With a “Street Lecture” the experts explained “why the actions of the ‘last generation’ are in all of our interests”. During the protests, passersby also attacked the activists. The police are now investigating against unknown perpetrators. By 8:30 a.m., all blockages had been cleared and traffic was flowing again.

The “Last Generation” has long been calling on the federal government to take immediate, effective measures to protect the climate. This includes speeding up to 100 km/h on the Autobahn and stopping new oil and gas drilling.
