Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) presented the “Elementar+” project on Thursday. Together with the University of Graz, a three-year part-time offer for 50 people who are already working as assistants in child education and care is being prepared for autumn.

The need for educators in crèches and kindergartens will continue to be high, Polaschek emphasized in a press conference together with the members of the National Council Sibylle Hamann (Greens) and Rudolf Taschner (ÖVP), as well as the rector of the University of Graz, Peter Riedler and the vice-rector Catherine Walter -Laager. The responsible educational institutions (BAfEP) and teacher training colleges have already trained many people. However, the demographic development indicated that there would still be a high demand.

Start in autumn

The qualification measure “Elementar+” is currently going through the necessary approvals. It is nationwide and will start in late autumn 2023. 50 places are provided for the first round. The completion of the course is free of charge for the participants. Polaschek emphasized that the Ministry of Education is fully covering the costs of the offer. In addition to blocked modules, there will also be a wide range of virtual options so that the skilled workers are not taken out of their jobs.

Minister Polaschek’s statement:

Hamann emphasized that the topic had “top priority”, and not just from a green point of view. “We need many new ways to get into this profession.” Hamann spoke out in favor of a “modern, attractive job description”. Taschner, on the other hand, is hoping for many men who feel attracted to the offer. “Elementar+” offers the opportunity to better establish interests and to raise one’s own profession to a better position.

The Graz Rector Riedler recalled the strong focus on education in his house. His deputy Walter-Laager emphasized that the shortage of skilled workers in this area is still dramatic. “When educators have to work in the minority, they lack the time and calm to really be able to accompany children.” This deficiency must be addressed “and with immediate effect”.
