The number of workers in unemployment insurance is the lowest in six and a half years

The number of workers in unemployment insurance registered a “substantial decline” during April compared to the previous two months in Uruguay: stood at 39,998 workers who accessed this subsidy and represents a 10.4% less than in March.

April brought good news for employment indicators, especially in terms of employment insurance indicators, as reported by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS). With 4,665 fewer workers who had to resort to this state subsidy compared to March, the indicator improved by 10.4% and reached the lowest figure in the last six and a half years. Just in October 2016, 39,906 were registered in this situation, and in March 2015, there were 39,266 people in unemployment insurance.

Currently, according to data from last April, there were 39,998 workers who had to resort to this insurance.

Optimism but caution on the part of the authorities

Although the news was presented as a optimistic data for the labor scenario in the country, the MTSS also considered that the caution in the conclusions since the record is monthly, but that the number of workers in unemployment insurance has been declining since the beginning of 2023.

In line with the caution requested by the ministry, it is enough to observe the reasons behind this significant reduction in April, when 13,289 workers left unemployment insurance, 22% more than in March. Of these, 4,904 did so due to reinstatement (36.9%) and 8,385 left due to dismissal (63.1%).

In return, during that month 8,624 workers entered the insurance, 872 workers less than the previous month, which represents a reduction of 10%. Of these, 5,016 (58.2%) entered due to dismissal, while 3,608 (41.8%) entered due to reduction or suspension. This distribution is very similar to the one registered in the previous month.

Finally, the analysis of the data by sectors of activity shows that the strongest reductions occur in the sector agriculture, forestry and fishing with 3,130 fewer workers, the industry with 1,470 workers, and the health with 477 fewer workers. In turn, in the sector of trade there is an increase of 534 workers in unemployment insurance.
