On the 25th anniversary of the cup triumph, Roitinger is convinced of the Rieder victory

This Friday marks the 25th anniversary of SV Ried’s first cup win. On May 19, 1998, the Innviertlers defeated the then series champions SK Sturm Graz 3-1 – and thus wrote Upper Austrian football history as the second domestic cup winner after LASK 1965.

Even today, the Innviertler need a win. With a draw, two rounds before the end, the Vorarlbergers would still have to slip, who would stay ahead if they were tied. “I firmly believe that we can do it. The performances have been good lately, even if the reward in the form of victories was missing. Altach is not in shape and does not have the same spirit as the Rieder team,” says Klaus, Ried’s coach of the century Roitinger in the detailed OÖN TV anniversary interview, in which he also remembers the many anecdotes and the tragic end of the celebrations with the fatal traffic accident of his assistant coach Marinko Ivsic.

He also talks about his cabin speech before the game: “I want us to meet in 20 years – many gray – to celebrate our cup winner anniversary.” This meeting will take place in June, five years late. Today, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary, Herwig Drechsel, the player of the century, is in the stadium alongside Roitinger.
