Mount Etna erupted on Sunday and covered Catania, the largest city in eastern Sicilyreason why the authorities decided to suspend the flights in the airport of that city.

“Due to the Etna eruptive activity and the abundant amount of volcanic ash on the surfaces of the airport, flight operations are suspended until security conditions are restored,” reported the Catania airport it’s a statement.

Last week, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Italy reported explosive activity in the crater Bocca Nuova from Etna Volcano via the Catania observatory.

At that time, the Civil Defense of the Sicily region issued a “red alert” in the Etna area since they assure that there is a “very high probability of imminent or ongoing fall of lava flows“, something that finally happened this Sunday.

Etna is the highest active volcano in Europeand can erupt several times a year, spewing lava and ash over the Mediterranean island. The last eruption of Etna began on November 27, 2022 and ended on February 14 of this year. In 2021 and early last year there were also eruptions.
