Many young compulsory school graduates cannot read and thus have fewer chances on the job market. Together with the Red Cross Youth and school social work, the voluntary “Lesepeers”, a group of around 25 pupils in the 4th and 5th grades of the WRG/ORG Wels, want to counteract this inequality. Once a week, children from various elementary schools in Wels come to the grammar school. The peers do their reading homework with them, do extra practice and try to encourage them to enjoy reading in a playful way. For this commitment, the school has now received the Solidarity Prize of the Diocese of Linz in the “Youth” category.
The program sees itself as an extension of the lessons and is implemented in close cooperation with the teachers and parents. All reading peers complete a training afternoon organized by the Red Cross. The willingness of young people to take responsibility for equal opportunities is impressive, according to the jury’s statement.
