Uruguay dropped 10% the number of public company officials

The number of employees of public companies in Uruguay low 10%, as reported by Director of the Uruguayan Planning and Budget Office (OPP), Isaac Alfie, within the framework of the position of improving the quality of spending carried out by the administration that leads President Luis Lacalle Pou.

This is how he reported it Alfie in statements to Underlined, where he assessed that the current administration “increased efficiency” of public companies in three years. In addition, he referred to Accountability and made it clear that they will analyze the requests of each Ministry according to the areas that the government considers priority.

The director of the OPP specified that the decrease in 10 percent in the number of employees of public companies has to do with the concept that manages Lacalle Pou about efficiency. “The issue is not what you spend, but how that spending returns to society in better public services,” he observed.

By delving into efficiency, Alfie He called to compare the number of services provided, kilowatts sold, telecommunications services and cubic meters of water sold with respect to their costs and anticipated: “A huge improvement can be seen.”

How the cost of Accountability will be defined

Regarding the next Accountability, whose submission period expires on June 30th, The official indicated that the requests of each portfolio will be analyzed by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. However, he recalled that the government has already complied with the fiscal rule in the first two years of his administration.

“The rule is about structural results and transitory factors affect in some way,” Alfie stated when referring to the impact of the drought for Uruguay, which he described as “a totally circumstantial thing that lowers the collection somewhat.” In this regard, he considered that this “allows us to have a slightly higher deficit.”

The latest increase to civil servants

It is worth remembering that Lacalle Pou decreed at the end of January of this year an increase in the 8.35% for all civil servants in the public sector. To the extent, he also provided for an adjustable fixed item of 1,500 pesos per month for those who earn less than 80,000 pesos.

Decree 7/023 specified that both state workers and officials in hierarchical political positions were going to receive a salary increase, proportional to their current income. These types of increases have not occurred since the same month of 2022.

In any case, the increase was made up of three factors: projected annual inflation of 6.7% by the end of 2023, an “additional” of 1.2% for “salary recovery” and a “corrective for inflation” of 2.35%, of which 2% was already advanced on July 1, 2022.
