Today begins the face-to-face stage of the 2023 Census in Uruguay, with the objective of updating the population figures of the country. The first part was done digitally and managed to achieve the highest response rate of Latin America, therefore, the option to answer online will continue to be available with certain conditions.

As of this Friday, the census takers will begin touring various areas of the country in the first gradual stage of the face-to-face census —the full deployment will be as of Monday—, after the success of data collection through the digital form, modality which was implemented for the first time in Uruguay. In the houses, they will be able to request the completion code that the system granted after the completion of the digital census; or they can take the questionnaire at the moment, if the person did not take the survey online.

If no one is at home, the INational Statistics Institute (INE) reported that the census takers will leave a visiting note with instructions to follow. In this way, the person can choose to: send by WhatsApp the completion code together with the housing code —both the name and number of the census taker as well as the housing code will be duly indicated in the note—; carry out the digital census using the housing code; or coordinate a new face-to-face visit via WhatsApp.

This new alternative opens the possibility that more people continue to register through the online form, so that the figure reached of 51.8% of households registered by this means could continue to increase in the coming weeks.

How to identify the census taker?

The census takers will have different identifications so that the people in the homes can quickly recognize them and verify their identity, so as not to run the risk of fraud or other crimes during this important stage.

Thus, the volunteers who will begin touring the houses from today will have official vests with the logo of the INE and the 2023 Census. In addition, the identity of all census takers can be verified on the official census page —in the “Census Taker Verification” option, entering the census taker’s ID number— or by calling 0800 2023 or *2023 from a cell phone.
