Two cars and a tram on line 18 in the direction of Schlachthausgasse were involved in the accident. According to the police, the accident was caused by a 38-year-old car driver who was under the influence of drugs and also did not have a driver’s license. A total of ten people were injured, two of them seriously.

At 7:35 p.m., the 38-year-old driver was driving his car on the Margaretengurtel in the direction of the Gumpendorfer Gurtel. For reasons that are still unclear, according to the police, the 38-year-old drove his car into the rear of a car driving in front of him. As a result, the 38-year-old skidded his car himself, left the road and crashed into an oncoming tram. The 38-year-old and his passenger were seriously injured in the collision. Eight other people suffered minor injuries: the two occupants of the other car, the tram driver and five passengers. The professional ambulance brought the injured, who required hospital treatment, to a hospital. Severe damage was caused to the vehicles.

According to the police, the 38-year-old did not have a valid driver’s license. A medical officer found him to have an impairment with cannabis herb. “A can of cannabis herb was also secured in the vehicle,” said spokesman Philipp Hasslinger.

The fire brigade secured the scene of the accident and was on the spot with 32 emergency services and nine vehicles. The operation of the tram had to be interrupted during this time.
