The subsidiary of Montevideo of the Association of Teachers of Uruguay (Ademu) carries out a 24-hour strike this Monday in rejection of “institutional violence”, after the death of a teacher in a public school, which occurred last week.

The measure, which only affects schools in Montevideo, was taken after the educational authorities denied Ademu the possibility of carrying out a reflection journeywithout students, after the death of a teacher in a school last Thursday.

On Thursday a teacher from the school 4 of Montevideo suffered a decompensation and was transferred to a health center, where he died.

The interim director of Primary arrived at the school, Olga de las Herasand leaders of the teachers’ union, who demanded to suspend classes and notify families.

Despite the shock to teachers and students, the decision was to continue with classes normally and suspend them on Friday, with prior notice to families, which was criticized by Ademu and ultimately led to a teacher strike.
