Uruguay closed a protocol agreement with China to export new products

The minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fishing (MGAP), fernando mattosreported at a press conference that Uruguay closed a protocol agreement with China for the export of live aquatic animals, sports horses, and lemons. Mattos considered the official MGAP mission in that country “successful”, since these requests were achieved and the possibility of new agreements in the future was left open.

The Asian giant is the largest consumer market in the world and the main trading partner of Uruguay, only in 2022 it totaled $7.4 billion in the purchase of national products. Mattos believes that there is a great opportunity for the flow of trade between the two nations to continue to increase.

Based on these agreements, the minister understands that “the long-term outlook is excellent”, and stressed that the protocols are ready in a context where the president Luis Lacalle Pou He is close to visiting the Asian country, probably during the second half of the year.

The head of the MGAP highlighted the protocol for the entry of sports horses, since “Uruguay is an exporter of horses“, counting China with regions like macau where equestrian sports are highly developed.

On the other hand, the agreement for a five-year plan for agricultural cooperation, and aquaculture and fishing was finalized, and the door was left open to add protocols for wild aquatic animals, poultry meat, and some cuts of beef, among other possible conventions.

Uruguay continues to seek to export poultry meat to China

Minister Mattos highlighted that there was progress in Hong Kong, a market of more than 7.5 million inhabitants, for the placement of poultry meat. This economically autonomous region is governed by its own technical criteria when importing.

Last February, Mattos was touring chicken breeding, fattening, and production plants in cannellonias well as mills in the area together with the Chinese ambassador in Uruguay, wang gang.

On that occasion, the head of MGAP commented on the importance of having the presence of the Chinese ambassador in the place where food is produced with the necessary balance for the production of poultry meat, as an aspect that adds to “the promotion “of the country in the eyes of China.
