Yesterday, employees of the city garden center planted the last polar begonia, so that today the park idyll is perfect: A festival concert from 8 p.m. marks the start of the Wels Burggarten concerts for this year’s season, in which they celebrate their 40th anniversary.

The history of the format runs through the programme, explains artistic director Wolfgang Homar: “Various orchestras will perform that have marked milestones in the concert series. The Munich police orchestra, for example, which is returning this year, was the first foreign orchestra to come here.”

The “Sinfonietta” ensemble with soloists from the State Music School in Wels and the Railway Music Association in Wels, of which Homar is the music director, will start today. “In doing so, we are taking into account the founding idea of the series: that the Wels concerts can be played free of charge for the population,” says the director. Tonight’s star guest is Wels native Gregor Hinterreiter, principal clarinetist with the Vienna Philharmonic.

After that, the audience in the Burggarten can expect top-class brass music every Thursday with free admission. As always, “free choice of seating” applies: There are armchairs in the area in front of the stage, but concertgoers can also spread out throughout the Burggarten with their own seating. “Everyone can enjoy the music however they want. For me, that’s what makes our concerts so unique,” says Homar.
