Free ride despite red: At these 23 traffic lights in Linz, cyclists are allowed to turn despite the red light

Turning right on red for cyclists was made possible in 2022 by an amendment to the road traffic regulations.

Turning off despite red switching at the traffic light: This would be possible last year with the amendment to the road traffic regulations and has been a reality in Linz since October with the premiere intersection of Landstrasse and Bürgerstrasse. The offer is constantly being expanded, from twelve in January to 23 intersections at which this model is used. New additions include the intersections Hafenstrasse – Untere Donaulände – Strasserau and Orionstrasse – Heliosallee – Lunaplatz.

Not every intersection is an option. Factors such as traffic safety and potential impairment of other road users are decisive when making the selection. “The city of Linz has been a pioneer in this area from the start – with the clear goal of accelerating the flow of traffic and improving the framework conditions for all forms of mobility. The model will continue to be scientifically evaluated in the coming months in order to ensure the safety of all road users, but also to identify the potential of this variant,” says Deputy Mayor Martin Hajart (VP), Traffic Officer.
