Dozens of volunteers from all over the world posted themselves at 17 observation posts around the famous lake in the Highlands on Saturday morning in partly torrential rain.
During the day, boats with special technology such as a hydrophone – a kind of underwater microphone – should cross over the up to 230 meter deep Loch Ness. The use of drones with thermal imaging cameras was also planned. According to organizers – the Loch Ness Center tourist attraction and the Loch Ness Exploration volunteer group – it is the most systematic search since 1972. Sightings of a strange creature have been reported for centuries. According to human judgement, however, it should not be a dinosaur or another primeval figure. Assumptions range from seals to very large catfish to porpoises.
Project manager Alan McKenna emphasized in the village of Drumnadrochit: “Finding the monster would be nice. But it’s about understanding the lake.” The group is planning to set up an audio library in which all the tones and noises from the lake are recorded. That will take years, stressed McKenna.
