We’ll start with the good news—and a September 1 pawn rule: “If the first is pretty and pure, it will be the whole month.”

And said day promises nice and warm weather – except for a few harmless cumulus clouds over the mountains and the Bohemian Forest. Since the above pawn rule statistically has a high hit rate, things are looking good for the approaching September. “Hard-boiled people even have a few bathing days ahead of them next weekend,” says meteorologist Alexander Ohms from Geosphere Austria. The weekend will be mostly sunny and warm, even if the daily lows in the morning can be below 10 degrees. “But the sweltering heat is over.” The approaching autumn can also be felt more and more clearly. “You can already tell, it’s partly foggy, it’s not that hot anymore.”

Up to 50 liters of rain

But at the beginning of the week the weather looks different. From Monday it will be rainy, especially in western Austria. Up to 50 liters per square meter is the forecast for Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg. Upper Austria is in the “yellow area”, but at least in the Salzkammergut and in the Innviertel it gets really wet. “In the mountains, where the soil is saturated, landslides can occur. The water levels of the Inn and the Danube will rise due to the water masses from the west,” says Ohms. It will also be raining more and more in the Linz area from Monday. But the thunderstorms like last time are pretty much over for this year.

Speaking of storms: Ohms shakes his head. “The recent thunderstorms were extremely well predicted, we warned, it could be read and heard in all media. The storm came almost according to schedule,” he says. “That’s why I’m surprised that people keep getting hurt. Anyone who spends the night on their boat with such forecasts – that’s incomprehensible. Many people have a fully comprehensive mentality and think that they will be rescued anyway. 20 years ago we would have been like that I’m not able to make exact forecasts like recently – but less has happened in the past. People are taking storm warnings less and less seriously.”
