Locusts herald the late summer

The nature conservation association is therefore calling for sightings to be reported on naturobservation.at or the app of the same name. The focus is on the bush cricket and the leek cricket.

The best time to observe the green and brown hoppers is in August and September, when all species draw attention to themselves with their singing. They grind their mouthparts, drum their legs, or rub their wing covers together or against their hind legs. It is primarily the males that you hear singing. Their song serves the purpose of attracting females to mate, but also to defend their territory against competitors.

140 grasshopper species

There are around 140 species in Austria, each with its own characteristic chirping, creaking or rattling sound. With us, locusts occur from the low valleys to the alpine mountain regions, from the moorland landscapes to the steppe areas, in the east and south the species diversity is particularly large.

Observing nature is an important tool for consciously perceiving and understanding the world of animals and plants. In order to expand the level of knowledge about the summer hoppers, the Nature Conservation Union asks you to report sightings of two special species, namely those of the green bush cricket and the leek cricket.
