The UN asked Uruguay not to open a diplomatic office in Jerusalem

last week the israeli government asked the Uruguay to open a diplomatic office in the city of Jerusalem, Faced with this, the special rapporteur of the United Nations He called on the government to reconsider the proposal as he considers it “illegal, unethical and unwise.”

The rapporteur of the UN on the human rights situation in the occupied palestinian territories since 1967, Francesca Albanese, called on the government to reconsider the decision to open a diplomatic office in the Israeli city of Jerusalem. “I hope that Uruguay reconsider this decision, because it is not only unwise and not only unethical, but it is directly illegal,” Albanese said at an event at the University of the Republicas the weekly Búsqueda was able to collect.

On the other hand, the rapporteur added that East Jerusalem It is considered by Israel as an annex, an action that is considered illegal and that cannot be validated. “Every move by Israel to change the status or the demography of Jerusalem today is at a point where it opens something like an embassy, or like what it did USAIt’s extremely dangerous,” Albanese said.

In this sense, the rapporteur assured that the UN requested Member States to avoid carrying out any decisions involving the Israel’s exercise of sovereignty on Jerusalem since it has a special status for the international organization. That is why, if Uruguay opens an office in that city, it would imply recognizing the sovereignty of Israel and the country would become “an accomplice in a serious error, totally contrary to international law.”

A decision made?

In the middle of this month, the Israeli government insisted on the Uruguayan to open a diplomatic office in Jerusalem to promote innovation, during a meeting that took place between Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo and his peer from that country, Eliyahu Cohen, to strengthen relations between both countries.

At the meeting, held in Montevideo, work continued on the main issues of the bilateral agenda. It was the first visit by an Israeli foreign minister to Uruguay in the last 40 years and, according to reports, Cohen invited the President Luis Lacalle Pou to make an official visit to Israel, where the country already has an embassy, in Tel Aviv.

From the israeli foreign ministry they took the opening for granted. “Uruguay is one of the most important friends of Israel in Latin Americaand the president’s decision to open an innovation office in Jerusalem It will promote relations between countries and economic and trade relations between us,” they said in a statement.

Even from their social networks, Cohen highlighted: “We agreed to open a branch of the Uruguayan Embassy in Jerusalem.” And he added: “We also discussed increasing trade between the countries to help combat the cost of living and I invited the president to visit Israel on the occasion of the inauguration of the branch in Jerusalem”.

“Uruguay worked hard for the establishment of the State of Israel, and now we are further strengthening the warm relationship between the countries”, valued the Israeli foreign minister.

The situation generated the repudiation of the embassy of the State of Palestine in Uruguay, from where they expressed their “conviction” that the country “will choose to continue with its historical and characteristic respect for International Law, including the resolutions United Nations, for which you have voted.” In the letter, they stressed that this alternative “would not only be a violation of what has been mentioned, but would also not contribute to the peace that we all seek to achieve.”
