The Finnish company’s transport was heading to the Port of Montevideo from the Paso de los Toros plant.
A company truck UPM loaded with cellulose overturned on the way to the Port of Montevideo after a stone was thrown at the windshield; they are currently working to contain the vehicle and much of the pulp has been removed from the site.
This Wednesday night a truck from the Finnish company overturned, UPM, who was heading to Port of Montevideo, from the pulp mill in Paso de los Toros. The driver explained to Telemundo that, on the way, he saw a group of four or five people who threatened to throw a stone and, finally, did so.
The stone hit the windshield of the vehicle and then in the arm of the 48-year-old man, who leafleted, crossed the flowerbed and the street parallel to the route, to finally end up leaning against an advertising billboard. The driver was taken to Sanatorium of the State Insurance Bank where he is in recovery.
The episode happened at the height of the bridge of Carlos Maria Ramirez, which is located near the refinery the tile. Currently, specialized personnel are working to contain the truck, so that it does not fall on the houses that are protected by the structure of the advertising poster. Meanwhile, part of the cellulose load has already been removed from the vehicle.
From UPM they regretted the incident
The Finnish company published a statement regretting what happened and assured that it is the “first of its kind since the temporary transport of cellulose and supplies by road began”. In this sense, he assured that thousands of trips are made per month and that no accidents occurred.
“Currently, the transport operation manages 170 round trips between the plant and the Port of Montevideo and, since the start of production, more than 6 million kilometers have been covered without accidents,” the statement explained.
