Some 140 injured in clashes between police and Eritrean refugees in Israel

Some 140 people were injured during clashes between the Israel Police and hundreds of Eritrean refugees who protested in Tel Aviv against the government of that African country.

The medical balance specified that 15 demonstrators were seriously injured, reported the Europa Press news agency.

Meanwhile, the Police detailed that “at least 27 agents were injured” in the clashes.

Of the 140 wounded, all of them treated at Sheba, Wolfson, Shamir-Assaf Harofeh and Beilinson hospitals, at least 11 have gunshot wounds.

The clashes began after a group of refugees protesting against the current Eritrean government attacked a demonstration of supporters of the Executive of that African country.

According to the statement from the office of the Israeli head of government, Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the police forces to restore public order.

The policemen used live ammunition when, they argued, “their lives were in real danger”, they mounted horses against the demonstrators and arrested 39 of them.

There are some 30,000 African asylum seekers in Israel, the vast majority from Eritrea, which has been ruled by President Isaias Afwerki since 1993.
