Microsleep was the trigger for the accident on Friday at 9:20 a.m. on the A1 western motorway towards Vienna, during which the police determined that the 30-year-old driver should not have been on the road at all.
Because of the microsleep, the Slovakian is said to have first come far to the left and then crashed into the guardrail on the right. During the investigation into the accident, it emerged that the driver was driving without a driver’s license but was under the influence of drugs. His driver’s license had already been confiscated four months ago in Slovakia, and an official doctor diagnosed the impairment due to drugs.
The driver and passenger were uninjured, but the car sustained significant damage. The 30-year-old was not allowed to continue driving anyway, as the police reported.
