Next week, between Monday, September 11 and 18, the Digital Days, the date of ecommerce promoted by the Chamber of the Digital Economy of Uruguay (CEDU) which each month focuses on promoting different sectors of electronic commerce. On this occasion, the main category will be Beauty and healthone of those who suffer the most from exchange difference with Argentina.
“Digital Days seek to offer greater opportunities to consumers in order to boost e-commerce. The first experiences showed us that the public takes advantage of these days to purchase items or access services at more convenient prices“, he pointed out in this regard Leonardo Alvarez, general secretary of the CEDU.
In this sense, the date of September, in addition to being a key moment to continue promoting the development of the ecommerce in the country, it could also be a great opportunity for merchants in the Beauty and Health sector, since this area is one of what biggest price gap presents in relation to the values of Argentina, due to the important exchange difference What about the neighboring country.
In this regard, the Economic Observatory of the Catholic University of Uruguay (UCU) identified in its August report that the price gap between one side of the border and the other was 126%—the lowest in the entire year—but that the greatest difference was in the category Miscellaneous Goods, which includes the hygiene basketwith a gap of 233%, well above the general average.
With the results of the elections Simultaneous and Mandatory Open Primaries (PASO) in Argentina and the consequent devaluation – accompanied by a significant rise in the parallel dollar or Dolar blue—, this gap widened even further. Although there is no updated data differentiated by category, the difference in general prices increased to 199% in just two days.
Digital Days expectations
It is in this particular context that the Digital Days in its last edition of this 2023, also serving as the opening of the Cyber Monday, which will take place between Monday, November 6 and Wednesday, November 8.
