The president of United States, Joe Biden, revealed today that he met at the summit of the G20 in India with the prime minister of China, Li Qiang, with whom he spoke about “stability”, in the midst of a moment of strain between the two most important economies in the world.

The Chinese Prime Minister Qiang, who took over as the country’s number two in March, attended the meeting of world leaders in Xi’s place. They were not scheduled to hold talks at the G20, but unplanned meetings at summits are common.
“Today I met with his number two in India,” said the US president and announced that They talked “about stability” and the southern hemisphere, although they did not specify what topics were on the table. Still, he said, “It wasn’t a confrontation at all.”

Biden maintained that the agreements with China’s neighboring countries seek to solidify a “stable foundation” in the Indo-Pacific region and that it was necessary not to think so much in “Cold War terms.”

For his part, Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the G20 summit in New Delhi, but Biden met with the premier, Li Qiang.
