After storm damage: new roof in four weeks at the earliest

The residents of the Lawog home in the municipality of St. Florian will probably never forget the evening of August 26th. The storm, which swept across the country with a huge thunderstorm cell, ripped off the entire roof of the apartment building within seconds and threw it hundreds of meters into a field (the OÖN reported). But the hours and days afterwards remain in the memory of the tenants. It took until midday on Monday – before that there had been torrential rain – until the first sealing measures were initiated by the non-profit state housing cooperative (Lawog). Until then, the basement was under water and the apartments and stairwell were partially soaked from rainwater. The residents were upset because their emergency calls did not reach the Lawog.

“There is a lack of a coordinator”

“We need a coordinator,” the tenants complained to the OÖNachrichten, who had seen the damage for themselves on Monday. The Lawog had assured that it had only found out about the accident on Monday morning and that they would trace the emergency calls, they said.

What has happened since then? The OÖN asked: On Tuesday, August 29th, the roof was temporarily sealed with a fleece covering, as the responsible department head of Lawog, Michael Huemer, told the OÖN. Last week there were also “inspections by insurance experts and companies entrusted with the restoration,” as Michael Huemer reported last Friday and continued: “The responsible building manager was also on site again and had discussions with residents The results were very positive. The removal of the scattered components that have now been released has also begun.”

Electricity from the tenants

The residents confirm that the responsible supervisor “was there briefly twice”. However, there is still a lack of construction electricity and the electricity for pumps still has to be provided by the residents. A ray of hope for the tenants: “At least dehumidification devices have been in use since Friday,” as one resident reports.

The water damage can be felt to varying degrees in the apartments. “Five apartments are partially affected to varying degrees. However, all apartments were and are classified as habitable,” reports Michael Huemer. Lawog says the necessary work will be carried out in agreement with the parties concerned. The complete restoration of the roof structure can be expected in around four weeks.

Michael Huemer from Lawog said that the reason the emergency calls from those affected did not reach Lawog was still being investigated.

Even if all apartments were classified as “livable”, one tenant had left his wet apartment and moved out just two days after the event. “That’s too risky for me,” the man had said.
